My take on Cursor matching frontier coding at a tenth of the price the same week Anthropic raises at $900B — and what anyone is still paying a premium for. Companion notes to Human in the Loop Episode 7.

Cursor shipped a coding model that matches Claude Opus 4.7 at one-tenth the price — built on an open Chinese base model. The same week, Anthropic is closing a $30B round at a $900B valuation. If frontier coding got commoditized in seven days, what is anyone still paying a premium for? That's the tension Oscar and I chewed on the whole episode.

Here's how I called it.

Signal or Noise

Cursor Composer 2.5 — top-three coding agent at a tenth of Opus's cost

This is the story. When "almost as good, way faster, way cheaper" shows up, it wins — and it just showed up for coding. Signal.

Andrej Karpathy joins Anthropic's pre-training team

A genuine talent signal about where the serious model work is concentrating. Signal.

Anthropic in talks for a $30B round at a $900B valuation

The valuation is eye-watering the same week its core product gets undercut on price. That contrast is the episode. Signal.

Google I/O 2026 — Gemini Spark agent and Antigravity 2.0

Real agentic tooling from Google, worth a look. Signal, lightly.

Hark's $700M Series A for a "secret" AI device

No product, huge round. Noise for now — call me when there's something to hold.

Stack Check

What I'd actually reach for:

  1. Matt Pocock's skills repo / Skill Handoff — a clean pattern for packaging and handing off agent skills.
  2. Convex — a TypeScript-native backend built for agentic workflows; less plumbing, more building.
  3. Google Antigravity 2.0 + CLI + Managed Agents API — worth kicking the tires on now that the tooling is real.

The through-line: the frontier has no moat, and the model is becoming the cheapest part of the stack. Stop paying premium tokens for every keystroke and start owning orchestration. Watch or listen below.
